Papers relating to the "George-Kreis," ca. 1891-1934.

Collection consists of letters received, manuscript poems (mostly calligraphic, and some illustrated) and original sheet music, and photographic prints relating to the circle of followers of the poet Stefan George, the George-Kreis. Those represented include, principally, Friedrich Gundolf, Berthold Vallentin, and Karl and Hanna Wolfskehl; also Ernst Morwitz, Rudolf Pannwitz, Joseph Pembaur, Walter Rathenau, Ernst Schertel, Ernst Schur, Alfred Schüler, Wolfram von den Steinen, Ludwig Thormaehlen, Karl Thylmann, Bernhard Victor von Uxkull-Gyllenband, Stefan Vallentin, Richard Wintzer, and Friedrich Wolters. The circle preached the cult of beauty in life as well as art in reaction to naturalism, realism and materialism, and stimulated a revival of the German literary language through the journal Blätter für die Kunst and other publications.
